Effective July 28th, 2019 the Washington State Legislature passed a new law that all motorcycle drivers must carry state minimum liability coverage along with proof of that coverage.

The state minimum of liability limits are:

$25,000 for bodily injury per person

$50,000 for bodily injury per accident

$10,000 for property damage of others

The new requirements are the same for personal automobiles in Washington State, but typically aren’t enough coverage for most motorcyclists. These minimum coverages are really to protect others from accidents caused by a motorcyclist, but here are a few other coverages that are important:

  • Medical Expense: Covers medical expenses of the driver in the event of an accident
  • Uninsured / Under-insured Motorist: Covers harm to the motorcyclist if the at-fault party does not have insurance or not enough insurance to cover
  • Customized Equipment : Many motorcycles are customized, but a standard policy typically only covers $2,000 to $5,000 in customized equipment

There are many other coverages to consider, but it’s important to know for now that you will be required to show proof of insurance, or it could result in a traffic violation.
